My girlfriend knows a lot more about sailing than I do. She’s an actual day skipper. She took the RYA courses, and she’s thinking about studying their more advanced sailing courses. She ribs me about it all the time in front of my friends, but I feel a lot safer out there knowing that she has all that knowledge.

To be honest, the ocean scares me. I’ve always had a phobia about getting lost at sea, and that’s not likely to happen with a real day skipper on board. She learned a lot of valuable information in those sailing courses. The ocean can seem harmless at times, but it can turn nasty in a hurry. You have to be concerned about everything from tidal waves, to sudden storms. The RYA courses teach you all about the basics of being a real sailor, and sea safety.

She keeps trying to get me to take some sailing courses, but I’m not really a fan of the water. I don’t swim that well, and I’ve always felt a little uncomfortable out on a boat. I can’t really see myself as a day skipper. She says the RYA courses are pretty easy, but some people just aren’t cut out to be a sailor. Besides, she already knows everything we need to stay safe out there, and I feel confident in her abilities.
